AI Visibility Hub

Generative engine optimization, in plain words, for HVAC, roofing, plumbing, garage doors, windows and doors, landscaping, auto repair and electrical companies.

What generative engine optimization means for a local business

Buyers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for a plumber, a roofer or an HVAC company instead of typing a keyword into Google. Those assistants search the live web and read pages before they answer, then they cite what they read. Generative engine optimization is the work of being the page that gets read and named, with the town in it. This hub explains the test we run, the two fixes that matter most, and how to check where you stand for free.

01

What generative engine optimization means

The short version, without the jargon.

People used to type a few words into Google and click a blue link. Now a growing share of buyers type or speak a full question into an AI assistant and read the answer right there in the chat, no click required. When the question names a trade and a town, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity search the live web to find pages that answer it, then they cite the pages they read.

Generative engine optimization is the work of being one of those cited pages. For a local service business the job is narrow: when a real buyer asks the assistant the exact question they would ask, town included, is there a page on your site that answers it in plain language, and can the assistant read basic facts about who you are, what you do and where you work. That is the whole idea. Nothing about it needs to be more complicated than that.

02

The six-question test

How we find out whether a business is actually getting named.

We write six questions a local buyer would ask for that trade and that area, the kind of thing someone types the night before they call a plumber or the morning the AC quits. We ask all six with live web search turned on, then we read the answers back the way a buyer would read them.

  • Is the business named in the answer.
  • If not, which business or businesses are named instead.
  • Which directories or other sites the assistant quotes as its source.

That is the test. It does not produce a ranking or a score that moves on its own. It reads six real questions and reports six real answers, in writing, so a business owner can see exactly what an assistant says today.

03

The three engines, and one fact that changed in July

ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity behave the same way for a local question. One of their sources changed this year.

ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity are three different companies with three different products, but for a local question they behave the same way: they search the live web and cite the pages they read. That means the page most likely to get cited is the one that answers the exact question with the town named on it, not a general page about the trade.

Since July 23, 2026, OpenAI has licensed Yelp reviews, ratings and business details directly into ChatGPT's answers, according to Search Engine Land. That means a business's Yelp profile can already be a source ChatGPT draws on for a local question, on top of whatever the business publishes on its own site.

04

The two fixes that matter most

Of everything we could work on, two things move the six-question test.

One page per buyer question. Not a blog post about the trade in general. A page that answers the exact question a buyer asks, with the town named, in plain language a buyer would actually read. Our how-to walks through writing one: how to get recommended by ChatGPT.

Business data an assistant can read. LocalBusiness or Service schema with the service area listed, the same name, phone, hours and service area repeated on the contact page, and nothing in robots.txt blocking the crawlers of OpenAI (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot), Anthropic (ClaudeBot), Perplexity (PerplexityBot) or Google (Google-Extended), since blocking them removes the page from what those assistants can read. Some assistants and crawlers also fetch a llms.txt file when one exists. Both are covered in order here: the AI search optimization checklist and llms.txt for a local business.

05

How the free check works

No email gate, no sign in, and it runs in English or Spanish.

We built a free check at conectamedia.app/ai-check that reads the business's own website first, the home page, robots.txt and llms.txt if one exists. It writes six questions a local buyer would ask for that trade and area, asks all six with live web search on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and reports whether the business is named, who was named instead, and which directories were quoted.

  • Checks whether robots.txt blocks AI crawlers and whether llms.txt exists.
  • Can compare one competitor side by side, in the same six answers.
  • Checks how the assistant describes the business, services and hours included.
  • Runs in English or Spanish.
  • The result page can be shared on its own. An emailed copy is optional. Nothing is required to see it.

Spanish speakers can start from our Spanish home page at conectamedia.app/es; the check itself runs in either language.

Questions we get asked

Short answers, no sales pitch.

What does generative engine optimization mean for a local business?

It means being the page an AI assistant reads and cites when it answers a buyer's question about your trade and your town. ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity search the live web for local questions and cite the pages they read, so the job is writing pages that answer those questions in plain language.

What is the six-question test?

We write six questions a local buyer would ask for a given trade and area, ask all six with live web search on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, then check whether the business is named, who was named instead, and which directories were quoted.

Does the free check require an email address?

No. There is no email gate and no sign in. The result page can be shared on its own, and an emailed copy is optional.

How is this different from a Google Maps ranking check?

Local SEO platforms like BrightLocal, Whitespark and Localo track where a business sits on a map grid or in a citation list. This tracks something different: what an AI assistant actually says out loud when it answers a buyer's question.

What is included in the paid AI visibility pilot?

One page for each missed buyer question, business data an assistant can read (schema with the service area, matching facts on the contact page), crawler access fixed, listings made consistent, then the same six questions asked again on day 14 with a before and after in writing. Pricing is on the pricing page.
